Westendorf Files Nomination Petition For Midland City Council

May 13, 2009

MIDLAND — Local businessman and Midland native Michael Westendorf officially filed petitions yesterday to kickoff his campaign for the Ward 1 seat on the Midland City Council by pledging to cut waste, excess and inefficiency in City Hall.

"I am honored to have the support of families and business owners across Ward 1," said Westendorf. "As I was going door-to-door in Ward 1, residents told me they want a councilman who understands that city government must live within its means — this isn't the time to put another burden on the cash-strapped pockets of taxpayers."

Westendorf will face incumbent Tom Adams, who has gone on the record supporting tax increases as the answer to Midland's budgetary woes.

"I completely understand the citizens' complaints," he said. "Under Tom Adams' tenure on the council, property taxes have increased and Midland's budget is in shambles. Tax increases discourage economic development and deter families and young professionals from moving to Midland."

Westendorf, a Midland native, also stressed the importance of ensuring a brighter future for the city's next generation.

"Midlanders shouldn't have to wave goodbye to their children and grandchildren at the airport," he said. "It's critical the council makes retaining the next generation a top priority at city hall."
